Last updated: October 30, 2026. Flight and hotel prices were checked on October 30, 2026 on Google Flights and Trip.com for the dates shown. Transport and attraction prices are the official 2026 fares. Dollar amounts use the fixed rate of about HK$7.8 per US dollar.

Short answer: a week in Hong Kong from New York starts at about $1,050 for the flight plus about $40 per night for a basic guesthouse room, or $65–95 per night for a simple hotel. Getting around is cheap: the Airport Express is HK$120–130 (about $16), and most of the city is easy by MTR, tram and ferry.

Getting from the airport

  • Airport Express to Hong Kong Station: HK$120 with Octopus or contactless card, HK$130 single ticket (about $15–17), 24 minutes. To Kowloon: HK$105/115.
  • Group tickets: 2 people pay HK$85 each to Hong Kong Station, 4 people HK$62.50 each.
  • Airport bus: routes such as A21 to Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui cost much less than the train but take about 45–60 minutes.

More on airport transfers: train vs. taxi prices compared.

Getting around the city

Use an Octopus card or a contactless credit card on the MTR, buses, trams and the Star Ferry. You do not need a car; for most visitors, renting one would only cost money and parking time. The Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong Island trams (“ding dings”) are two of the cheapest sightseeing rides in the city.

Sample budget: 5 nights for two from New York

  • Flights: 2 × $1,103 = $2,206 (one stop via Seoul)
  • Mid-range hotel: about $80 per night × 5 = about $400
  • Airport Express both ways (group ticket for 2): about $44
  • Peak Tram and cable car for two: about $104

That is about $2,750 for two before food and shopping. Food can be very cheap at local noodle shops and street stalls, or expensive in hotel restaurants.

Practical tips

  • Entry: US citizens can visit Hong Kong without a visa for up to 90 days. Check the rules for your passport before booking.
  • Mobile data: an eSIM is the easiest option; see our eSIM guide for Asia.
  • Weather: October to December is usually the most comfortable time. Summer is hot, humid and typhoon season.
  • Payment: cards work almost everywhere; carry some cash for small shops and markets.
