Travel Cost Guide

Last updated: October 30, 2026. The numbers below come from our own destination guides, where we checked flight prices on Google Flights and hotel prices on Trip.com on October 30, 2026, plus official transport and entry prices. Prices change daily, so treat them as a snapshot, not a quote.

Sources: our destination guides linked in the table, all updated October 30, 2026. Flights are round-trip economy per person on Google Flights for spring 2027 dates (Boston: March 2027; Transylvania: May 2027). Singapore daily costs are half of the couple’s daily budget. Hotels from Trip.com, including taxes.

What a whole trip costs, per person with flights, from the same guides:

  • Europe, 10 days (London, Rome, Lisbon or Berlin from New York): about $1,750–2,050 on a budget, $2,250–2,950 mid-range. Details: true cost of traveling across Europe.
  • London, 5 nights: about $1,150–1,250 budget, $1,500–1,650 mid-range.
  • Transylvania, 10 days: about $1,300–1,350 budget, $1,750–1,800 mid-range.
  • Boston, 3 nights from Chicago: about $700–750 budget, $950–1,050 mid-range.
  • Singapore, 7 nights for two from the West Coast: about $2,300 budget, $3,400 mid-range (total for both).

How to build your own travel budget

Step 1: Price the fixed costs

These you pay no matter what: flights, the hotel, travel authorizations and insurance. Check real prices for your dates instead of guessing. Some current fees for 2026: the UK ETA costs £20, and visitors to the US pay for an ESTA.

Step 2: Estimate daily costs

Food, local transport, entry tickets and small extras. Use the table above as a starting point, or the detailed guide for your destination. Remember city and tourist taxes on hotels, for example a 7.5% city tax in Berlin and €4 per person per night in Lisbon.

Step 3: Add 10–15% for surprises

Price changes, a taxi when you are tired, a bag fee. A buffer means a surprise does not wreck the budget.

Comparing tour expenses with independent travel costs

What changes the cost the most

  • When you travel. In our off-season test, most hotels were 28–64% cheaper in February than in July. Flights changed less.
  • How early you book. In our weekend getaway check, flights for the following weekend were up to 48% more expensive than the same routes five weeks later.
  • Where you sleep. Hotels are usually the biggest daily cost. A hostel bed or a hotel a few metro stops out can halve it.
  • How you get around. Public transport with daily caps (London, Los Angeles) keeps costs predictable; car rentals add parking and fuel in cities.

Costs travelers often forget

  • Bag fees on basic economy and low-cost airlines; see our baggage fee comparison.
  • Hotel taxes and resort fees, especially in Las Vegas and many European cities.
  • Paying in the wrong currency: choosing dollars on a card machine abroad usually adds 3–7%. Always pay in the local currency.
  • Airport transfers: fixed taxi fares like €56–65 from Paris CDG or €55 from Rome Fiumicino. See how to avoid tourist traps.
  • Mobile data abroad, if your plan does not include roaming.

Tours or independent travel?

A package or group tour bundles hotels, transport between stops and some meals into one price, which makes the budget easy to plan. What is usually not included: the flight to the starting point, optional excursions, tips and many meals. Independent travel is usually cheaper if you are willing to plan, and it lets you choose cheaper hotels and eat where locals eat. For a first trip to a complicated region, a tour can be worth paying for.

Planning a travel budget with a calculator and map

Monthly travel budgets

For long trips, multiply the daily cost by 30 as a first estimate. Based on the table above, a budget month on the ground would be roughly $2,000 in Transylvania and about $2,500–4,000 in Berlin, Lisbon or Rome. In practice, long stays are often a bit cheaper per day, because weekly or monthly rentals and transit passes cost less, and you stop paying for rushed decisions.
