Last updated: October 30, 2026. All prices below were checked on that date on Google Flights and Trip.com, comparing the same routes and the same hotels in peak season (July 2027) and off-season (February 2027). Prices change daily, so treat them as a snapshot, not a quote.
“Travel off-season and save 50%” is one of the most repeated travel tips. We wanted to know if it is actually true, so we priced the same flights and the same hotels for a week in July and a week in February.
Short version: hotels are where off-season really pays off. Flight savings are smaller and depend heavily on the route. And some destinations barely change at all.
Our test: July vs. February

A beach example: Cancún
Flights from Chicago to Cancún cost $322 during spring break week (March 13–20, 2027) and $312 in early May (May 1–8, 2027). Practically no difference on the cheapest fare. For beach destinations, the savings usually show up in resort prices rather than flights, and “off-season” there often means hurricane season (June to November), which comes with its own risks.
What we learned
- Hotels: often 30–60% cheaper. In London, the same rooms cost about a third to two thirds less in February. That is where most of the money is.
- Flights: 10–35% cheaper, sometimes nothing. Rome dropped a third, London only 12%, Cancún basically not at all.
- Not every hotel follows the pattern. Hotel Taormina in Rome cost almost the same in both seasons. Always compare the actual hotel, not an average.
- Daily costs barely change. Food, public transport and museum tickets cost the same all year. A Tube day cap in London is £8.90 in July and in February.
Put together, a 10-day Europe trip that costs about $2,500 per person in summer can realistically cost around $1,800–2,000 in winter, mainly because of the hotel. That is a big saving, but it is closer to 25% than to 50% for the whole trip.
When is off-season?
It depends on the destination, not the calendar:
- European cities: roughly November to March, except Christmas markets and New Year. Spring and October are a good middle ground with decent weather and lower prices than summer.
- Mediterranean beaches: October to May. Many beach hotels and restaurants close in winter, so the cheapest months are not always the best value.
- Caribbean and Mexico: lowest prices in late summer and fall, during hurricane season. May and early June are a calmer shoulder season.
- US cities: often winter, but business hubs like New York or Boston can be expensive on weekdays all year. Big events and conventions matter more than the season.
For real examples, see our guides to Rome, the UK and our Europe cost comparison, which were all priced for spring.
How to get the real off-season savings
- Compare the same hotel in both seasons. Averages hide the hotels that do not drop their prices.
- Book refundable rates. Winter weather is less predictable, and free cancellation lets you rebook if prices fall further.
- Check local events. A trade fair, a marathon or a school holiday can make an off-season week as expensive as summer.
- Check opening times. Some sights, ferries and beach businesses run reduced schedules or close in winter.
- Do not expect cheaper food or transport. Budget daily spending the same as in summer.
When off-season is not worth it
- When the main attraction is seasonal (beach days, hiking passes, summer festivals).
- When weather can disrupt transport, like ferries in the Greek islands in winter or storms in the Caribbean.
- When the price difference is small, like our Cancún flight example. Then the better weather may be worth the few dollars.
Car rentals often follow the same pattern as hotels, with the biggest prices in July and August. Compare options in our cheap car rental comparison.
FAQs
How much do you save by traveling off-season?
In our test, hotels were about 30–60% cheaper in February than in July, flights 10–35% cheaper, and food and transport the same. For a whole trip, that typically means about 20–30% savings, not 50%.
Are flights always cheaper off-season?
No. New York to Rome was 34% cheaper in February, New York to London only 12%, and Chicago to Cancún almost the same in March and May.
What is the cheapest month to travel to Europe?
Usually January to early March, outside holidays and major events. November is often cheap too, but some attractions have reduced hours.
Is October off-season?
For much of Europe and the US, October is a shoulder month: cheaper than summer, with mild weather and full services. It is a good compromise if you do not want winter conditions.
What does not get cheaper off-season?
Restaurant prices, public transport and museum tickets usually stay the same all year.
