Short answer: Fethiye is a relaxed harbor town on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast and the base for Ölüdeniz’s Blue Lagoon, paragliding from Babadağ and the Saklıkent Gorge. The nearest airport is Dalaman (about an hour away), $101 from Istanbul in our check. Hotels cost about $75–130 a night for two in May. Because the sights are spread out, a rental car is useful: about $35 a day in May, $55 in August.
Getting to Fethiye
- By air: fly to Dalaman (DLM). Istanbul – Dalaman one way on May 12, 2027 cost $101 nonstop on Turkish Airlines in our check. From the US, connect in Istanbul (New York – Istanbul round trips in March 2027 were from $703; see our Istanbul guide).
- From Dalaman airport: about an hour by car, airport bus (Havaş/Muttaş) or pre-booked transfer.
- From Antalya: about 3.5–4 hours along the coast road, a beautiful drive via Kaş. See our Antalya guide.

Things to do

- Blue Lagoon (Ölüdeniz): the lagoon is a protected nature park with a small entry fee (about 100–150 lira in 2026); the main beach next to it is free.
- Paragliding from Babadağ: tandem flights over the lagoon cost roughly $120–180 depending on season and operator; flights last 25–40 minutes.
- 12 Islands boat trip: full-day boat trips from Fethiye harbor with swimming stops; compare prices and what’s included (lunch, transfers) at the harbor.
- Kayaköy: an abandoned Greek village on the hillside, about 15 minutes from town, with a hiking trail down to Ölüdeniz.
- Saklıkent Gorge: a deep, narrow canyon about 45 minutes away; you wade through cold water, so bring water shoes. The deeper parts open only after the spring snowmelt.
- Lycian rock tombs above the town and the fish market, where you choose fish and a nearby restaurant cooks it.
- Lycian Way: the long-distance trail starts near Ölüdeniz; short day sections are easy to do.
Car rental in Fethiye
The main sights are not walkable from each other, and dolmuş minibuses are slow for day trips. A car lets you combine Saklıkent, Kayaköy, the ancient city of Tlos and the coast road to Kaş in your own time. Pick it up at Dalaman airport.
What it costs: at Dalaman airport, DiscoverCars listed cars from about $17 a day, with an average of about $33–39. By month: about $22 in February and November, $35 in May, $39 in June, $51 in July and $55 in August (updated October 29, 2026).
Driving tips
- Bring your US license and an International Driving Permit.
- Mountain roads to Babadağ and Kayaköy are steep and narrow; drive slowly.
- Parking in Ölüdeniz is paid and fills up in summer; arrive early.
- Ask how motorway tolls (HGS) are billed, and check the fuel policy and deposit.
When to go
May, June, September and October are ideal: warm sea, fewer crowds and lower prices. July and August are hot, crowded and the most expensive for hotels and cars. Saklıkent Gorge is best from late spring, once the water level drops.
