Salik tolls: the cost most visitors forget
Dubai’s toll system, Salik, has no booths. A tag in the rental car is scanned each time you pass a toll gate, and the rental company bills you afterwards, often with an admin fee on top. The rates in 2026:

The prices above include the 5% VAT that has applied to Salik since June 1, 2026 (before that, AED 6 and AED 4). During Ramadan, the time windows change. Sheikh Zayed Road has several gates, so a day of driving back and forth across the city can easily mean six to ten crossings.
Tip: Before you sign, ask the rental desk exactly how Salik is billed and how much the admin fee per crossing or per day is. This varies a lot between companies.
Fuel is no longer cheap
Many older guides say gas in Dubai costs a fraction of U.S. prices. That is out of date. UAE fuel prices are set every month, and they rose sharply in 2026. For October 2026 the official prices are:
- Super 98: AED 4.40 per liter (about $4.53 per gallon)
- Special 95: AED 4.28 per liter (about $4.41 per gallon)

- Short stays or layovers of one to two nights.
- You mostly stay in one area, such as Downtown or the Marina.

It is the most expensive month for DXB rentals. Summer is usually cheaper, but expect temperatures well above 100°F.
5. Check your credit card’s rental coverage
Some U.S. credit cards include rental car damage coverage abroad. Call your card issuer before the trip and ask specifically about the UAE before you decline the rental company’s insurance.
6. Drive outside Salik peak hours
Moving your drives out of 6–10 a.m. and 4–8 p.m. on Monday to Saturday lowers each toll crossing from AED 6.30 to AED 4.20.
7. Document the car
Film the car from all sides, including wheels, roof and interior, at pickup and at return. It is the simplest protection against damage disputes.
