- By car: about an hour from Izmir. Start at the upper gate and walk downhill, or park at the lower gate.
- By train: regional trains and the İZBAN commuter line run to Selçuk, including from Izmir airport (about an hour, a few dollars). From Selçuk, take a taxi or minibus to the site entrance.
- With a tour: the easiest option without a car; compare the price with doing it yourself.
Do you need a car in Izmir?
Not inside the city: the metro, İZBAN trains, ferries across the bay and buses cover it, and parking in the center is hard. But for day trips, a car makes a big difference: Ephesus and Selçuk, the beach towns of Çeşme and Alaçatı, the ancient city of Pergamon, and onward travel along the coast to places like Fethiye or Antalya.
What it costs: at Izmir airport, DiscoverCars listed cars from about $22 a day. The average was about $34–40 a day across the year, with clear seasonal swings: about $27 a day in January, $42 in May and June, and $59 in August. Book early for summer, and pick up the car at the airport rather than in the city center.
Driving tips
- Motorways around Izmir charge tolls electronically (HGS). Rental cars usually have a toll sticker; ask how tolls are billed.
- A US driver’s license plus an International Driving Permit is the safe choice.
- Check the fuel policy (full-to-full is usually cheapest) and the deposit on your credit card.
- City traffic can be heavy in rush hour; plan day trips to leave early.
Getting around without a car
- From the airport: the İZBAN commuter train runs to the city about every 10–15 minutes; Havaş buses go to Alsancak and Konak.
- In the city: metro, trams, buses and ferries all use the İzmirim Kart transit card.
- Ferries across the bay between Konak, Alsancak and Karşıyaka are a cheap and scenic way to get around.
