Last updated: October 30, 2026. Flight, hotel and rental car prices below were checked on that date and change daily, so use them as a guide and confirm the price for your own dates. We converted Brazilian reais (R$) at roughly R$5.10 per US dollar, the rate in October 2026.
Rio can be surprisingly affordable or surprisingly expensive, and the difference is mostly where you stay and when you go. Food, the metro and Uber are cheap by US standards; beachfront hotels in Copacabana and Ipanema, Carnival and New Year’s Eve are not. Americans also need an e-visa again. This guide uses prices we checked ourselves on October 30, 2026.
Is Rio de Janeiro Expensive to Visit?
Not for everyday costs. Per person per day, two people sharing a room, excluding flights:
- Budget: about $70–$110
- Mid-range: about $130–$210
- Upscale / beachfront luxury: $350+
These include hotel, food, local transport and sightseeing, based on the prices below.
Entry: The Brazil e-Visa for Americans
Since April 10, 2025, US citizens need an e-visa for Brazil again, and the rule still applies in 2026. It costs $80.90 per person (children too), is applied for online on the official portal (brazil.vfsevisa.com), and is valid for 10 years with multiple entries. Apply at least two weeks before you fly; airlines check it at check-in. Canadians and Australians need one as well. UK and EU citizens can still visit visa-free.

In short: simple hotels in or near Copacabana and Botafogo start at about $55–$75 a night for two; reliable chain hotels close to the beach cost $95–$150; beachfront 5-star hotels quickly reach several hundred dollars. Hostels in Santa Teresa, Botafogo or Ipanema are cheaper for solo travelers. Botafogo is a good-value base with metro access.
Food Costs: Eating Well Without Overspending
- Street snacks (coxinha, pastel, açaí): a few dollars
- “Prato feito” or a “por quilo” (pay-by-weight) lunch: often around $6–$12
- All-you-can-eat churrascaria: roughly $25–$45 per person
- Caipirinha at a beach kiosk: a few dollars, more in tourist areas
Budget travelers can eat well for $20–$30 a day; mid-range is more like $40–$60. Restaurants usually add a 10% service charge to the bill.

Getting Around Rio: Transportation Costs
- Metro: R$7.90 per ride (about $1.55) in 2026. It connects Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo and the center.
- Uber and 99: cheap and widely used, especially at night. Most rides within the South Zone cost a few dollars.
- Airport: Galeão is far from the beaches; an Uber to Copacabana is usually the easiest option.
Rental car: not recommended in Rio itself (traffic, parking, safety). For trips to Paraty, Búzios or Arraial do Cabo it can make sense: on DiscoverCars, cars at Galeão airport started at about $17–$18 a day (prices updated October 29, 2026), with an average of about $27. August was the cheapest month (about $21 a day), December the most expensive (about $33).
Attractions and Activities: What Costs Money and What’s Free
Free: Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon beaches, the Escadaria Selarón, sunset at Arpoador, the Lagoa, and walks in Santa Teresa and Lapa.
Paid (2026 prices):
- Christ the Redeemer (ticket includes transport up): R$134 by the Corcovado train (about $26), R$132 by official van from Copacabana or Largo do Machado, or R$87 by van from the Paineiras visitor center (about $17)
- Sugarloaf Mountain cable car: R$205 for the regular adult ticket (about $40); Brazilians and Rio residents get cheaper promotional tickets
- Guided tours (favela tours, boat trips, day trips): prices vary a lot by operator, so compare before you book

Seasonal Price Differences: Timing Matters
- Most expensive: Carnival, New Year’s Eve (Réveillon on Copacabana beach) and the December–January summer holidays. Hotels often require minimum stays and charge several times the normal rate.
- More affordable: roughly April to June and August to November, outside big events. The weather is still warm.
Common Budget Mistakes Travelers Make
- Assuming everything is cheap: beachfront hotels, imported goods and tourist restaurants can cost as much as in the US.
- Booking Carnival or New Year’s too late: prices rise sharply as the dates get closer.
- Forgetting the e-visa: without it, Americans can’t board the plane.
- Over-scheduling paid tours: many of Rio’s best experiences are free.
Practical Tips to Keep Costs (and Risks) Under Control
- Use Uber or 99 at night instead of walking long distances.
- Take only what you need to the beach; leave passports and expensive jewelry at the hotel.
- Eat lunch at “por quilo” restaurants: good value and lots of choice.
- Pay by card where possible, and keep a little cash for beach kiosks.
- Buy Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf tickets online to skip lines.
