Last updated: October 30, 2026. We checked the same hotels on Trip.com on that date for a stay four days later (November 3–5, 2026) and for the same weekdays about a month later (December 1–3, 2026). Prices change constantly, so treat this as a snapshot, not a rule.

What we learned
- In Chicago, last minute paid off. Five of seven hotels were cheaper four days out, by up to 24%. Big business cities often drop rates when rooms are not filling up in a quiet week.
- In Las Vegas, it was mostly the opposite. Six of eight hotels were more expensive at short notice.
- Events beat timing. Two Las Vegas hotels were almost twice as expensive in early December. When a big event or convention is in town, prices jump no matter how early or late you book.
- The same week, two cities, opposite results. There is no general rule. You have to compare the actual hotel and dates.
One caveat: we compared two different weeks, not the same dates booked at two different times, so seasonal demand plays a part. That is exactly the choice most travelers face, though: book a trip now, or wait.
When last-minute booking works
- Big cities in quiet weeks, especially business hotels on weekends or during holidays when business travelers stay home.
- Destinations with lots of hotels, where unsold rooms are common.
- When you are flexible about the hotel and the neighborhood.
When it backfires
- Peak season and holidays, when the cheaper rooms sell out first.
- Event weeks: conventions, festivals, big games, graduations.
- Small towns and islands with few hotels.
- When you need a specific room type, like a family room or accessible room.
The smartest strategy: book early, re-check later
- Book a refundable rate early, so you have a room guaranteed.
- Check the price again one or two weeks before and a few days before your trip.
- If it has dropped, book the cheaper rate and cancel the first one before the free-cancellation deadline.
That way, you get the last-minute savings when they happen, without the risk of paying more or finding nothing.
More ways to pay less
- Compare at least two sites. The same room can have different prices on different booking sites.
- Compare total prices. Some sites show rates before taxes and fees; in Las Vegas, resort fees can add a lot.
- Shift by one night. Weekday and weekend rates can differ a lot, especially in Las Vegas.
- Look one neighborhood over from the main tourist area.
- Consider a package. Flight + hotel bundles are sometimes cheaper; see our vacation package test.

FAQs
Are last-minute hotel deals real?
Sometimes. In our test, five of seven Chicago hotels were cheaper four days ahead, but six of eight Las Vegas hotels were more expensive. It depends on the city, the week and local events.
How far in advance should I book a hotel?
For busy dates, book a refundable rate as early as possible. For quiet weeks in big cities, waiting can pay off, but re-check rather than gamble.
Is it cheaper to book a hotel on the same day?
It can be in large cities with many empty rooms, but there is no guarantee, and the best-value rooms often sell out first.
Why do hotel prices jump on some dates?
Events, conventions, holidays and weekends. In our test, two Las Vegas hotels cost almost twice as much in early December as in early November.
Do booking sites all show the same price?
No. Prices, taxes, fees and cancellation terms can differ, so compare the total price and conditions before you book.
