Booking your flight and hotel together as a vacation package is often cheaper than booking them separately, but not always. Instead of repeating marketing claims, we ran a real test: the same 7-night trip from New York to Cancún, priced as a package and as separate bookings, at seven popular resorts. Here’s what we found, and how to tell whether a package is a good deal for your trip.
Our Test: Package vs. Separate Booking (New York – Cancún)
Trip: 2 adults, New York (JFK) to Cancún, March 6–13, 2027 (7 nights), all-inclusive resorts. Package price: Expedia flight + hotel bundle. Separate price: the same hotel booked alone on Expedia, plus the cheapest round-trip flight we found on Google Flights for the same dates ($419 per person with one stop, so $838 for two).
| Resort (all-inclusive) | Package total (2 people) | Hotel + flights booked separately | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Sands | $2,653 | $2,705 + $838 = $3,543 | Package saves $890 |
| Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya | $6,742 | $6,569 + $838 = $7,407 | Package saves $665 |
| Wyndham Grand Cancun All Inclusive | $2,957 | $2,687 + $838 = $3,525 | Package saves $568 |
| Oleo Cancun Playa All Inclusive | $2,721 | $2,258 + $838 = $3,096 | Package saves $375 |
| Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas (adults only) | $4,309 | $3,520 + $838 = $4,358 | Package saves $49 |
| AVA Resort Cancun | $5,333 | $4,314 + $838 = $5,152 | Separate is $181 cheaper |
| Dreams Sapphire Resort & Spa | $4,317 | $3,153 + $838 = $3,991 | Separate is $326 cheaper |
Prices checked October 30, 2026, including taxes and fees, for 2 adults and 1 room. Room types and the flights included in each package can differ from our separate comparison, so treat the differences as a guide.
The result: the package was cheaper at 5 of 7 resorts, by $49 to $890 for two people. At 2 resorts, booking separately was $181–$326 cheaper. So bundling is often worth it for resort trips, but you should always compare before you book.
Why Packages Are Often Cheaper
Hotels and airlines can offer lower rates inside a bundle than they show publicly, because the individual price of the room or the flight isn’t visible on its own. Resort destinations with many rooms to fill, like Cancún, Punta Cana, Orlando or Las Vegas, tend to show the biggest package savings. That matches what we saw in our test.
Other Benefits of Booking Flight + Hotel Together
- Less planning: flights and hotel dates are matched automatically, and everything is in one itinerary.
- One booking to manage: one confirmation and one place to make changes.
- Total price upfront: you see the full cost of flight and hotel in one number, which makes budgeting easier.
- Possible extras: some packages include airport transfers, resort credits or breakfast. Check what’s actually included for your offer.
When Booking Separately Is Better
- The package flight is a bad fit: early-morning departures, long layovers or a basic fare without bags can make a cheap package worse value.
- You want a specific small hotel: boutique and independent hotels are often not available in packages.
- You use points or have elite status: hotel status benefits and award flights usually only apply to direct bookings.
- You need maximum flexibility: packages can have stricter change and cancellation rules than flexible hotel rates.
- City trips: outside big resort destinations, the savings are usually smaller.
Comparison: Package vs. Separate Bookings
| Feature | Vacation package | Separate bookings |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Often lower for resort trips (cheaper at 5 of 7 resorts in our test) | Sometimes lower, especially with cheap flights or hotel deals |
| Booking time | Fast, one checkout | Slower, several bookings |
| Choice | Limited to participating airlines and hotels | Any flight, any hotel |
| Changes | One contact, but rules can be stricter | Each provider has its own rules |
| Loyalty benefits | Often limited | Full benefits when booking direct |
How to Check If a Package Is Really a Deal
- Price the package for your exact dates and hotel.
- Price the hotel alone for the same room type and dates.
- Price the flight alone, ideally the same flight times as in the package.
- Add the extras: checked bags, seat selection, transfers and resort fees.
- Compare the totals and the cancellation rules. Only then decide.
Red Flags That Should Make You Walk Away
- Flight times listed as “to be confirmed”: you’re locked in before knowing your schedule.
- A hotel with poor recent reviews: cheap for a reason.
- A headline price that only applies to groups of four or more.
- Mandatory resort fees not included in the price shown. Read more in our guide to hotel resort fees.
- Very short or no free cancellation window.
- No customer service contact listed.
- Aggressive countdown timers and “only 1 left” pressure.
If you see two or more of these, close the tab and keep comparing.
Package Deals and Hidden Costs
A cheap package price can creep up once you add airport transfers, checked bags, seat selection or room upgrades. Also watch for resort fees, blackout dates, limited availability and non-refundable terms. Always read the terms before you click “book”.
5 Factors That Decide Whether a Package Saves You Money
1. Destination Type
Resort destinations (Cancún, Punta Cana, Riviera Maya, Orlando, Las Vegas, Hawaii) tend to produce the biggest package savings because hotels there have the most rooms to fill. Smaller city destinations rarely show big package discounts.
2. Which Airlines Serve the Route
Packages mostly use the big airlines. If a low-cost carrier or Southwest dominates your route, compare its fare against the package before you book.
3. How Far in Advance You Book
For resort trips, booking a few months ahead usually gives the best choice and prices, especially for school holidays. Very last-minute bookings can go either way. See our guide on the best time to book hotels.
4. Loyalty Program Status
If you have hotel elite status or airline miles, the value of points, free nights and benefits can be higher than the package savings. Run the math first.
5. Travel Insurance
Packages often offer insurance add-ons. Standalone travel insurance can be cheaper for the same coverage, so compare before you add it.

Final Thoughts
Vacation packages are often the cheaper choice for resort trips: in our Cancún test, the package saved up to $890 for two people. But they are not automatically cheaper, and at two of seven resorts booking separately won. The best approach is simple: price the package, then price flight and hotel separately, and book whichever is cheaper for the same trip.
FAQs
Are flight and hotel packages really cheaper?
Often, but not always. In our test of 7 Cancún resorts (checked October 30, 2026), the package was cheaper at 5 resorts, by $49 to $890 for two people, and more expensive at 2.
Can I change my trip if I book a package?
It depends on the provider and the fare. Many packages allow changes or free cancellation up to a certain date, but some flights in packages are non-refundable. Check the rules before you book.
Do packages include extras?
Some do, such as airport transfers, breakfast or resort credits. It varies by offer, so check what’s included.
Where are packages most worth it?
In resort destinations like Cancún, Punta Cana, Orlando, Las Vegas and Hawaii, where hotels have many rooms to fill.
Is a package worth it for a short trip?
It can be, especially for a weekend at a resort or in Las Vegas. For short city trips, booking separately is often just as cheap and gives you more choice.
