Berlin is one of the better-value capitals in Western Europe: food is cheap, many sights are free, and public transport takes you everywhere. The catch in 2026 is hotels, which have become noticeably pricier, plus a 7.5% city tax on top. This guide uses prices we checked ourselves on October 30, 2026, so you can see what a Berlin trip really costs.

Average Cost of a Trip to Berlin (Quick Snapshot)

Per person per day, two people sharing a room, excluding flights:

  • Budget: about $85–$120
  • Mid-range: about $140–$190
  • Comfort / premium: $250+

These figures include hotel, food, local transport and sightseeing, based on the prices below. Solo travelers pay more for the room, unless they choose a hostel.

Flights: Getting to Berlin

We checked round-trip economy fares to Berlin Brandenburg (BER). Prices are per person, including taxes and fees.

Route (round trip) Dates Cheapest found
New York (JFK) – Berlin Mar 10–20, 2027 $844 (1 stop, SAS); $858 (Aer Lingus)
Los Angeles – Berlin Mar 10–20, 2027 $930 (1 stop, SWISS); $931 (Lufthansa/United)
London – Berlin Mar 10–13, 2027 $112 (nonstop, Ryanair from Stansted); $131 (easyJet from Gatwick); $198 (British Airways from Heathrow)

Checked on Google Flights on October 30, 2026. Individual observations, not averages. Budget airlines charge extra for checked bags.

From the US, our search found no nonstop flights to Berlin for these March dates, so expect one stop. Berlin is also well connected by train: flying into another European hub and taking the train can sometimes be cheaper.

Accommodation: Where Your Budget Hits Hardest

We checked hotels on Trip.com for March 10–13, 2027 (3 nights, 2 adults, 1 room):

Hotel 3 nights incl. taxes Per night
Heart of Gold Hostel & Capsules Berlin $101 about $34
Premier Inn Berlin City Spittelmarkt $237 about $79
Living Hotel Großer Kurfürst $263 about $88
Mercure Hotel Berlin City $305 about $102
B&B HOTEL Berlin-Alexanderplatz $309 about $103
Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz $404 about $135
Hilton Berlin $548 about $183
Titanic Gendarmenmarkt Berlin $602 about $201

Trip.com, checked October 30, 2026. Berlin’s city tax may be charged separately at the hotel (see below). For mid-April 2027, the same hotels were mostly 10–35% more expensive in our check.

In short: a simple but central hotel costs about $80–$105 a night for two, upper-mid-range $135–$200. Apartments with a kitchen can lower costs on longer stays, because you’ll spend less on food.

City tax: Berlin charges a 7.5% accommodation tax on the net room price (without extras like breakfast). On a $100 room, that’s roughly $7 more per night.

Food Costs: Affordable Without Feeling Cheap

  • Döner, currywurst or other street food: about $5–$10
  • Café lunch: about $12–$18
  • Mid-range dinner: about $20–$35 per person
  • Beer (0.5 l) in a bar: about $4–$6

Budget travelers can eat well for $30–$40 a day; mid-range is more like $50–$70. In restaurants, tap water is rarely served for free, so you’ll usually pay for bottled water.

Getting Around: Public Transport Prices in 2026

  • Single ticket (zones AB, 2 hours, one direction): €4.00 (about $4.50)
  • 24-hour ticket (AB): €11.20 (about $13)
  • Small-group 24-hour ticket (up to 5 people, AB): €35.30
  • Airport: BER is in zone C, so you need an ABC ticket (€5.00 single) to get to the city center.

Good to know: the 7-day ticket was discontinued in the Berlin region in January 2026. For a longer stay, the Deutschlandticket (€63 a month, a monthly subscription you can cancel) covers all local transport in Germany. Paper tickets must be validated before you ride, and fare inspectors do check.

Refueling a car

Rental car: you don’t need one in Berlin itself. For day trips to Potsdam, the Spreewald or the Baltic Sea, cars at BER airport started at about $32 a day on DiscoverCars (prices updated October 29, 2026), with an average of about $43 a day. Fuel is expensive: around $1.95 per liter, or about $7.40 per gallon.

DiscoverCars checks local and international rental companies side by side, so you see the full price before you book. Most listings come with free cancellation.

  • Single museum ticket on Museum Island: mostly €14
  • Museum Pass Berlin (3 days, 30+ museums): €32
  • Visitors under 18 get free entry to the state museums.

Note: the main Pergamon Museum building is closed for renovation; the “Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama” exhibition nearby is open. Also, Berlin’s state museums are no longer free on the first Sunday of the month.

Seasonal Price Differences: When You Go Matters

  • Peak season (June–August): higher hotel prices and flights, lively atmosphere
  • Shoulder season (April–May, September–October): mild weather, but hotels aren’t always cheaper; big trade fairs push prices up
  • Low season (November–March): usually the cheapest hotels and flights, cold weather, ideal for museums. The Christmas markets in December are busier and pricier.

Practical Money Tips for Berlin

  • Sundays: almost all shops and supermarkets are closed. Plan ahead, and use Sundays for flea markets like Mauerpark or for museums.
  • Cash: card payment is now common, but some small cafés, bars and late-night shops (Spätis) still prefer cash.
  • Tickets: buy them in the BVG app; app tickets are validated automatically.
  • Reichstag dome: free, but you must register online in advance.
  • Museums: if you only visit Museum Island, the €24 day ticket is cheaper than two single tickets.

With a one-stop flight from the US and a simple central hotel, 5 days in Berlin cost about $1,270–$1,440 per person on a budget.
