A trip to the UK is not cheap, but it is a lot more predictable than most people think. The big costs are the flight and the hotel. Almost everything else, from the Tube to the best museums, is either capped or free.

Below are real 2026 numbers for a first trip built around London: flights from New York and Los Angeles, actual hotel prices, the new travel authorization fee, transport, attractions and three sample budgets.

Quick answer: what does a UK trip cost?

For 5 nights in London, per person (two people sharing a room), with flights from the US:

  • Budget: about $1,150–1,250 (hostel, Tube, free museums, cheap meals)
  • Mid-range: about $1,500–1,650 (central 3-star hotel, a few paid sights, pub dinners)
  • Comfort: about $2,300–2,500 (nonstop flight, 4-star hotel in the West End, Heathrow Express)

The full breakdown is further down. First, the individual costs.

Flights from the US to London

We checked round trips to London Heathrow for March 10–20, 2027 (economy, one adult):

Route Cheapest (1 stop) Cheapest nonstop
New York (JFK) – London (LHR) $704 (Icelandair) $825 (American / British Airways)
Los Angeles (LAX) – London (LHR) $754 (JetBlue) $919 (United)

Source: Google Flights, checked October 30, 2026. Round trip, economy, 1 adult.

Two things stand out. First, the nonstop premium is only about $120–165, which is often worth it on a transatlantic flight. Second, these are March prices. June to August and the weeks around Christmas are usually noticeably more expensive, so if your dates are flexible, spring and late autumn are the sweet spots.

The UK ETA: a new $27 entry fee

US citizens no longer just show up with a passport. You need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Since April 8, 2026 it costs £20 (about $27) per person, including children. It is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Apply on the official GOV.UK website or the UK ETA app. Third-party sites charge much more for the same thing. Most applications are approved within minutes, but give yourself at least three working days. You also need an ETA if you only change planes at Heathrow and pass through UK border control.

London hotel prices

London is where most budgets expand. We checked 3 nights (March 10–13, 2027) for two adults in one room on Trip.com. Prices are totals including taxes:

Hotel Area 3 nights Per night
Smart Hyde Park Inn (hostel) Bayswater $170 ~$57
Travelodge London City Near Tower Bridge $319 ~$106
Tavistock Hotel Bloomsbury $371 ~$124
Premier Inn London Paddington Paddington $438 ~$146
Zedwell Piccadilly Circus West End $489 ~$163
The Tower Hotel Tower Hill $750 ~$250
Strand Palace Covent Garden $792 ~$264

Source: Trip.com, checked October 30, 2026. 2 adults, 1 room, total price including taxes. The hostel price is for two beds.

The takeaway: about $105–165 a night gets you a clean, central budget or 3-star room. Below $60 a night you are in a hostel. The very cheapest “London” results (around $40 a night) are near Heathrow, which means a long commute every day and is rarely worth it.

Outside London, prices drop noticeably. Cities like York, Manchester, Liverpool or Cardiff usually cost less for a comparable room, although Edinburgh in August is a well-known exception.

Getting from Heathrow to central London

Option Time One-way fare (2026)
Piccadilly line (Tube) 50–60 min £5.90 peak, less off-peak (~$8)
Elizabeth line ~35 min £15.50 (~$21)
Heathrow Express (to Paddington) 15 min ~£25 walk-up (~$34), cheaper in advance
Black cab 45–70 min £60–100 (~$80–135)

Fares with contactless card, as of the TfL fare change on March 1, 2026.

For most budget travelers the Piccadilly line is the clear winner. The Elizabeth line is the better choice with heavy luggage or if your hotel is near Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road or Liverpool Street.

Getting around London: the daily cap

Do not buy paper tickets or an Oyster card. Just tap your contactless credit card or phone at the gates. The fares and caps are the same as Oyster, and US cards without foreign transaction fees work fine.

  • Tube, Zone 1: £3.00 off-peak, £3.10 peak per ride
  • Bus: £1.75 per ride, with unlimited bus transfers within one hour
  • Daily cap, Zones 1–2: £8.90 (about $12). After that, every further ride that day is free
  • Weekly cap, Zones 1–2: £44.70 (Monday to Sunday, not a rolling 7 days)

One card per person: you cannot pay for two people with the same card. And use the same card all day, otherwise the cap will not apply.

Trains around the UK

Long-distance trains are where timing matters most. London to Edinburgh is the classic example:

  • Lumo advance single: from about £19.90
  • LNER advance single: from about £41.40
  • LNER Anytime single bought on the day: up to £204.80

That is a 5–10x difference for the same 4.5-hour trip. Advance tickets usually go on sale about 12 weeks ahead and are tied to one specific train. Coaches (National Express, Megabus) are slower but often cheaper still. Our guide to train tickets in Europe covers the general booking rules.

Renting a car in the UK

Do not rent a car for London itself. Central London has an £18 daily Congestion Charge (since January 2, 2026), parking is expensive and the Tube is faster. A car only makes sense for the countryside: the Cotswolds, the Lake District, Wales or the Scottish Highlands.

If you do rent, prices at Heathrow are reasonable. DiscoverCars showed small and compact cars from about $13–18 a day for early November 2026. Their own data puts the yearly average at about $41 a day, with January the cheapest month (around $29) and July the most expensive (around $63). Expect a manual transmission unless you filter for automatic, and remember that the UK drives on the left.

Attractions: many of the best are free

This is where the UK is genuinely good value. The British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the V&A are all free to enter (special exhibitions cost extra). The same goes for the parks, the Changing of the Guard and walking along the South Bank.

The paid headline sights do add up, though:

  • Tower of London: £37 adult (about $50), Crown Jewels included
  • Stonehenge: roughly £22–32, depending on the day and whether you book online in advance (cheaper)
  • Edinburgh Castle: book online. The gate price is higher and slots sell out in summer

Pick two or three paid sights that really matter to you and fill the rest with free museums. You can browse guided options in our tours and activities section.

Food costs

Food is more flexible than its reputation suggests. Rough daily ranges per person:

  • Budget, about £25 a day (~$34): supermarket breakfast, a supermarket “meal deal” or bakery lunch, a cheap dinner
  • Mid-range, about £45 a day (~$60): café breakfast, casual lunch, a pub dinner with a drink
  • Comfort, about £75 a day (~$100): sit-down meals and a couple of drinks in central London

These are typical ranges, not quotes. Two easy savings: tap water is free and safe everywhere, and many restaurants in central London offer cheaper fixed-price lunch menus.

Sample budgets: 5 nights in London

Per person, two people sharing a room, flights from New York in March. Exchange rate about $1.34 per pound (late October 2026).

Cost Budget Mid-range Comfort
Flight (JFK–LHR) $704 (1 stop) $704 (1 stop) $825 (nonstop)
5 nights (your half) $140 (hostel) $310 (Tavistock) $660 (Strand Palace)
UK ETA $27 $27 $27
Airport transfers + Tube $76 $76 $127
Food (5 days) $170 $300 $500
Attractions $50 $120 $250
Total ~$1,167 ~$1,537 ~$2,389

Transport: Piccadilly line both ways (2 × £5.90) plus 5 days at the £8.90 cap. Comfort uses the Heathrow Express (2 × ~£25) instead. Food and attraction amounts are estimates.

From Los Angeles, add roughly $50–95 for the flight. In summer, expect both flights and hotels to cost more. If you prefer one booking for everything, our test of flight + hotel packages shows when bundling actually saves money.

Common UK budget mistakes

  • Forgetting the ETA. No ETA, no boarding. Apply on GOV.UK, not through an agency.
  • Buying train tickets on the day. Long-distance walk-up fares can be 5–10x the advance price.
  • Using several cards on the Tube. The daily cap only works if you tap the same card or phone all day.
  • Staying near Heathrow to save money. The cheap room costs you time and fares every single day.
  • Treating London as the whole country. Other cities are cheaper and well connected by train.

FAQs

How much does a week in the UK cost?

Using the same prices as above, 7 nights in London cost roughly $1,300 per person on a hostel budget and about $1,800 mid-range, including a flight from New York. With a 4-star hotel and a nonstop flight you are closer to $3,000.

Do Americans need a visa for the UK?

Not for tourist trips of up to six months, but you do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). It costs £20 (about $27), is valid for two years and must be approved before you fly.

What is the cheapest way from Heathrow to London?

The Piccadilly line on the Tube, at £5.90 or less with a contactless card. It takes about 50–60 minutes to central stations like King’s Cross, Piccadilly Circus or South Kensington.

Is London more expensive than the rest of the UK?

Yes. Hotels in particular cost noticeably more in London than in most other UK cities. Splitting your trip between London and a second city like York or Edinburgh (outside August) can lower your average nightly cost.

When is the cheapest time to visit the UK?

Generally January to March and November, outside school holidays. Summer and the Christmas season are the most expensive for both flights and hotels.
