Planning a trip to Los Angeles is easy to underestimate. The city is spread out, hotel prices swing by neighborhood, and getting around can cost $5 a day or $50 a day depending on how you do it. This guide uses prices we checked ourselves on October 30, 2026, so you can see what a trip actually costs right now, not what it cost a few years ago.
The Big Picture: How Much Does a Trip to Los Angeles Cost?
For a 5-night trip from within the US, here is what one person should plan for, based on the prices we checked on October 30, 2026 (travel dates in December 2026):
- Budget traveler: about $700–$900 (sharing a room, flying a low-cost airline, using Metro)
- Mid-range traveler: about $1,700–$2,050 (own mid-range hotel, nonstop flight, some rideshares or a rental car)
- Comfort traveler: $2,500 and up (upscale hotel in Beverly Hills or Santa Monica, car, paid attractions)
These ranges include round-trip flights, hotel, food, local transport and a few activities. The three things that move the total most are your departure city, the neighborhood you sleep in, and whether you rent a car.
Flights: What We Found for LAX
We checked one-way economy fares to Los Angeles International (LAX) for a weekday departure on December 9, 2026. Prices include taxes and fees for one adult; bag fees can come on top.
| From | Cheapest one-way | Cheapest nonstop seen |
|---|---|---|
| Dallas (DFW) | $47 | $101 (Frontier), $119 (Southwest, Delta) |
| Chicago (ORD) | $65 | $119 (United, American, Delta) |
| Atlanta (ATL) | $69 | $110 (Frontier) |
| Seattle (SEA) | $73 | $119 (Alaska, Delta, United) |
| New York (JFK) | $128 | $179 (JetBlue, Delta) |
One-way fares for December 9, 2026, checked on Google Flights on October 30, 2026. Individual observations, not averages.
Two things stand out. First, the cheapest fare is often a one-stop or a low-cost airline; paying $40–$60 more gets you a nonstop on most of these routes. Second, a round trip from most US hubs came in under $300 for these dates, which is a lot less than many older guides suggest.
Fares are usually lowest from January to early March and from late September to early December, outside the holiday weeks. Summer, spring break and the days around Christmas and Thanksgiving push prices up.
Hotels: Real Prices by Neighborhood
Accommodation is where LA earns its expensive reputation, but the spread is wide. We checked hotel prices on Trip.com for December 9–12, 2026 (3 nights, 2 adults, 1 room):
| Hotel | Area | Per night | 3 nights incl. taxes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton Garden Inn LAX | LAX airport | $114 | $397 |
| Ramada by Wyndham Koreatown West | Koreatown | $117 | $387 |
| DoubleTree by Hilton Downtown | Downtown / Little Tokyo | $144 | $501 |
| Stile Downtown by Kasa | Downtown | $167 | $501 |
| Loews Hollywood Hotel | Hollywood | $227 | $723 |
| Montrose at Beverly Hills | West Hollywood | $311 | $966 |
| InterContinental Downtown | Downtown | $371 | $1,292 |
Trip.com, checked October 30, 2026. “Per night” is the room rate before taxes and fees; the 3-night total includes them.
What this means for your budget: a decent hotel in Downtown or Koreatown costs roughly $115–$170 a night before taxes in December. Hollywood is about $60–$80 more, and West Hollywood or Beverly Hills about twice the Downtown price. Taxes and fees can add up to about 15–20% on top, so always compare the final total, not the headline rate.
Watch for parking. Many LA hotels charge for parking, often $20–$50 a night. If you rent a car, add that before you compare hotels.

Transportation: Getting Around Los Angeles
LA is big and spread out, so this line in your budget depends on your plans more than anywhere else.
- Metro (bus and rail): $1.75 per ride with two hours of free transfers. With a TAP card you never pay more than $5 a day or $18 for 7 days; after that, rides are free. That makes Metro by far the cheapest option.
- FlyAway bus from LAX: about $12.75 one way to Union Station downtown.
- Rental car: on DiscoverCars, deals at LAX started at $54.87 a day for an economy car (Toyota Yaris or similar) in early November 2026, with small cars from about $64 a day. Add fuel and hotel parking.
- Uber/Lyft: fine for short hops, but longer rides across the city add up quickly, especially at rush hour or to and from LAX.
Car or no car? If you stay 4+ days and want beaches, Malibu or day trips, a car usually pays off. If you stay Downtown or in Hollywood and mainly explore those areas, Metro plus the occasional rideshare is cheaper, because you skip parking fees entirely.
Food & Dining: Easy to Enjoy, Easy to Overspend
LA’s food scene is diverse and budget-flexible. Typical daily food spending per person:
- Budget: $30–$45 (tacos, food trucks, casual diners, grocery breakfasts)
- Mid-range: $50–$75 (one sit-down meal a day)
- High-end: $100+
Street tacos, food trucks and the restaurants in Koreatown, Thai Town and the San Gabriel Valley give you great value. Many LA restaurants also add a service charge of a few percent to the bill, so check the receipt before you tip on top.

Attractions & Activities: What’s Free and What’s Not
Many of LA’s best experiences cost nothing:
- Beaches in Santa Monica, Venice and Malibu
- Griffith Observatory (free entry; parking is paid)
- The Getty Center (free entry; parking is paid)
- Hiking trails and viewpoints, such as Runyon Canyon
- Walking Hollywood Boulevard, the Venice canals or the Arts District
Paid highlights like theme parks, studio tours and big museums can add $50–$150 per person each, so pick one or two rather than stacking them. Prices change often, so check the official site before you go.
Daily Expense Breakdown
Here is what a typical day in LA costs per person, using the hotel and transport prices above (hotel shared by two):
| Category | Budget | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel (half of a double room, incl. taxes) | $65 | $120 |
| Food | $40 | $65 |
| Transport | $5 (Metro day cap) | $40 (car share or rideshares) |
| Activities | $10 | $40 |
| Daily total | about $120 | about $265 |
Hotel and transport based on prices checked October 30, 2026; food and activities are typical estimates.
Multiply by the number of days and add your round-trip flight, and you have a solid estimate. Traveling solo? Roughly double the hotel line.
How the Length of Your Trip Changes the Budget
Your LA budget doesn’t grow in a straight line. Longer stays often lower the daily average: weekly hotel and car rates are cheaper per day, the Metro 7-day cap ($18) kicks in, and you are less rushed into expensive last-minute choices. A 3-day visit usually costs more per day than a 7-day trip at the same comfort level.
Seasonal Price Differences
| Season | Cost level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Jan–Feb) | Low | Cooler, fewer tourists, cheapest flights |
| Spring (Mar–May) | Medium | Pleasant weather; spring break weeks are pricier |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | High | Peak tourism and the highest hotel rates |
| Fall (Sep–Nov) | Medium | Warm, good value outside Thanksgiving week |
Common Budget Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking a hotel without checking the parking fee
- Comparing nightly rates instead of the total with taxes and fees
- Underestimating travel time between neighborhoods
- Paying for single Metro rides without a TAP card (you lose the $5 daily cap)
- Stacking several paid attractions on one trip

Sample Budgets by Travel Style (5 nights, per person)
- Budget, sharing a room: flight $100–$260 round trip, hotel $325, food $200, Metro $18–$25, activities $50 → about $700–$860
- Mid-range, own room: flight $240–$360, hotel $750–$850, food $325, transport $200–$300, activities $200 → about $1,700–$2,050
- Comfort: nonstop flight, Beverly Hills or Santa Monica hotel, rental car with parking and paid attractions → $2,500+

Final Thoughts
Los Angeles costs less than its reputation if you plan around the three big levers: fly on a weekday outside the holidays, stay in Downtown, Koreatown or near LAX instead of the beach towns, and use Metro with a TAP card unless you really need a car. With those choices, a 5-night trip can stay under $1,000 per person.
